There’s an interesting beauty hack that’s been circulating the internet for the past couple of years…beauty gurus have reported success with cleaning their makeup sponges in the microwave, which removes all built-up makeup residue and achieves a squeaky-clean appearance.
If there is one thing all beauty enthusiasts have in common, it’s a beauty hack! This is especially true when it comes to cleaning our beloved egg-shaped makeup sponges, which may be brimming with bacteria and germs unseen to us. We’ve always got the option to replace the sponges as soon as they start to look worn, but the cost quickly adds up!
So let’s give makeup sponges in the microwave a bash…
Here’s how it’s supposed to work:
Gather your dirty sponges
Due to the melting pot of foundation and liquid highlighters in your makeup bag, your sponges can become quite dirty, and getting it all off can be difficult. Even if it isn’t visibly dirty, product could be clogged up on the inside of your sponge. So, gather all of your dirty makeup sponges and place them in a bowl.
Bust out the soap
Squeeze a small amount of shampoo or body wash into the bottom of a microwave-safe container. Fill the container halfway with water and thoroughly mix the liquid.
Microwave for 30-60 seconds
Place your dirty makeup sponges (one at a time) in the microwave-safe container with the soapy water for about one minute. Keep in mind that if you microwave your sponges without the water, they will melt.
Scope the results
Allow the water to cool for a minute before attempting to remove your makeup sponge, or you will burn your hand. Next, squeeze the water from the makeup sponge and rinse it under running water until the water runs clear. If your beauty blender comes out looking only a tad cleaner, repeat the entire process one more time.
