Yoga mats encourage peace – until they need to be cleaned. It’s tricky to do it without damaging the mat, but if you’re using it often, it’s likely covered in smudges, marks and sweat (as well as a load of bacteria). Here’s how to make a DIY yoga mat mist to solve these woes in a way that’s tough on bacteria but kind to the earth and your mat.
Lavender is not only aromatic but also antibacterial. Make sure to wipe your yoga mat down with soap and water first, after which this mist will give your mat a better smell, remove further dirt and germs, and not damage the mat. Here’s how to make the mist.
What you’ll need
- 100 ml of water
- 50 ml of witch hazel
- A few drops of lavender oil
- A spray bottle
Fill the bottle three-quarters full of distilled water. Distilled water is necessary because it is purified water with contaminants such as bacteria removed. It can sit in a sealed container and still be safe for some time. Then, add the liquids to your spray bottle, and there you have it. Always shake before use to distribute the lavender essential oil. Spritz it across your mat and use a cloth to wipe it down.
(Tip: Other oils you can add include tea tree, lemon or even mint)
