As they say, “you are what you eat…”
We all know that what we eat plays a huge role in our health, both mentally and physically. You really start to notice this once you put effort into your diet choices and start reaping the effects thereof.
We’re all facing a steep cost of living at the moment, which also means the cost of food, especially healthy food, is expensive. However, in the end, you may end up paying more for the unhealthy food you put into your body and the effect it has on you…
Fast food, as tasty and desirable as it is, it is not the best option for your body. One of the biggest negative impacts fast food has on your system is the increase of inflammation. Inflammation is linked to serious illnesses like cancer, and has an effect on anxiety and how your body deals with it.
A great alternative is opting for something more wholesome. If making a home-cooked meal is not doable for whatever reason, most supermarkets offer a variety of meals that you can just pop in the oven. Cue the sweet potato fries and health chicken breasts that have already been marinated for you! Heck, if you’re feeling up to it, try and recreate some of your fave fast food meals at home, using healthier ingredients!
Everybody loves a little drink every now and then…
Whether it’s a cocktail or your favourite cider, alcohol does boost serotonin, however temporary those effects are. Serotonin is the hormone in the body responsible for happiness. The unfortunate thing about alcohol is that it can also have the very opposite effect on the body, which results in a spike in your anxiety.
A good option to go for is a virgin cocktail, which many restaurants and bars offer. You can also opt for a 0% alcohol beer or cider. A glass of red wine won’t hurt you, but it’s better to be mindful of what you’re drinking if you’re eating to beat anxiety. We love a fruity mocktail, or even a chilled CBD drink, which can actually ease your anxiety and help for a number of other health concerns.
Who doesn’t love a sweet treat to make your day just a little bit better? The unfortunate part of the story is that sugar, as many of us know, is not the best thing to be filling up with. A popular go-to is often opting for zero-sugar drinks or treats, but these are filled with artificial sweeteners. This in essence still tricks the body into thinking you’re getting sugar, which has adverse effects like causing anxiety, too.
The best thing to do is to fill your pantry with items packed with nutritional value. A great way to do this is to be more mindful of your shopping and what you’re looking for. Instead of running down the aisle, adding every sweetie and bag of chips to your cart. be more mindful of what you’re going to nourish your body with.
