The Brazilian limeade is a drink that I thoroughly enjoyed when I stayed in Brazil. I’ve only had it a handful of times since I don’t have much of a sweet tooth (anymore!), but I do know that I loved it and many a Brazilian loves this tart-like, happiness-in-a-cup drink.
Commonly called Limonada suíça, which translates to ‘Swiss lemonade’. In Portuguese, the word for limes and lemons are the same, limão. But since we are in South Africa and there is a distinction, we will call our recipe limeade, as we are using limes and not lemons.
Here’s how to create your very own Brazilian limeade as the summer months are approaching once again.
Ingredients:
- 4 limes, washed and scrubbed
- 6 cups of water
- 1 cup of sugar (200g)
- 6 tablespoons of condensed milk
Method:
- Wash the limes and cut off the ends.
- Use half of the water, sugar and limes at a time and place them into a blender.
- Place your blender on the pulse setting and let it pulse up to 7 times.
- Use a mesh strainer and push out the juices until you’re left with just the lime pulp.
- Discard the pulp.
- Repeat with the second batch.
- Add the condensed milk and serve chilled, with ice and lime rind to garnish.
- Add sugar or an extra helping of condensed milk to taste.
Pro tip: If you don’t have a blender, you can use lemon or lime juice and simply mix the ingredients together in a shaker. This is the traditional way Brazilians prepare Limonada suíça.
