Golden oldies
You can say what you want – the late 90s and 2000s was the era for rom-coms. I wish I could add more, but alas, here are my top 5:
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003):
Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, and a stunning yellow dress need I say more? This classic follows the hilarious journey of a journalist who attempts to drive a man away in just 10 days. As one of the greatest rom-coms of all time, you get witty banter, quotable moments, and a charming storyline that still enchants audiences over 20 years later.
Rent it on: Apple TV or Google Play
Notting Hill (1999):
The ultimate love story of all time Notting Hill follows an ordinary bookseller who finds himself falling in love with a famous actress.
Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts shine in this tale of an ordinary bookseller who finds himself falling in love with a famous actress. Be entranced by Notting Hill in London and fall head over heels for Hugh Grant as he falls for Julia Roberts.
Watch it on: Showmax
10 Things I Hate About You (1999):
In the mood for an angsty teen rom-com? You can never go wrong with 10 Things I Hate About You. I love this movie, and if you’ve yet to watch this class movie, just know that you’ll be treated with a young Heath Ledger, truly funny moments, and a happy feeling of nostalgia.
Watch it on: Disney+
Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011):
Yes, this technically doesn’t fall within the 2000s – but Crazy, Stupid, Love is a timeless rom-com that everyone should see (or rewatch about 50 times). This sweet movie explores the complexities of love and relationships in a funny, heart-warming, way.
Oh – and you get to see Ryan Gosling with imagery abs and Emma Stone trying out the Dirty Dancing jump – which is cool.
Rent it on: Apple TV or Google Play
High Fidelity (2000):
John Cusack is a rom-com king, and no one can tell me otherwise. High Fidelity, in my opinion, is one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time – even better than Say Anything (I said what I said). It has a better story, and an even better soundtrack, and the story unfolds with a unique narrative style.
Give this golden oldie a watch if you’re in the mood for amazing music, Jack Black being Jack Black and an authentic love story.
Watch it on: Disney+
Newbies to Watch:
Now – onto the last two decades. Here are the relatively new rom-coms that instantly made the “that’s a classic” list.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018):
Crazy Rich Asians was a ground-breaking movie that brings to life the extravagant world of Singapore’s elite. I adored this movie when it first came out, and now it’s one that I rewatch often. Enjoy a delightful mix of humour, culture, and heart-warming romance in this amazing romantic comedy.
Rent it on: Apple TV or Google Play
The Lovebirds (2020):
Murder mysteries and romance? Yes, please!
This seemingly simple rom-com takes a thrilling turn when a couple inadvertently becomes entangled in a murder mystery. With its fast-paced humour and charismatic leads, it’s a fresh and entertaining addition to the genre.
Watch it on: Netflix
How To Be Single (2016):
Sometimes, learning to love yourself in your single era is all you need to thrive – which is why I love How to Be Single. This is the perfect movie to watch with your girlfriends and a few bottles of wine. And of course, Rebel Wilson is as hilarious as always as she helps a friend navigate the single life in NYC.
Watch it on: Prime Video
Palm Springs (2020):
Time-loop storylines are always fun to watch. But when you throw romance and Andy Samberg into the mix, you’re in for an amazing experience. Palm Springs, also starring the wonderful Cristin Miliot, is filled with clever humour and unexpected twists, it’s a refreshing and inventive addition to the world of romantic comedies.
Rent it on: Apple TV or Google Play
Anyone But You (2023):
Anyone But You is a new rom-com that has instantly become a classic. Whilst it’s still in theatres, it has made a huge splash, with audiences raving about how wonderful it is. Many have said that it’s reminiscent of the early 2000s rom-coms we love so much, and from what I’ve seen on TikTok, they’re not wrong. Follow Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in this instant classic retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
Watch it on: Still in theatres.
So grab some wine, popcorn, choccies and your beau or girls and enjoy these timeless rom-coms!
