To celebrate Suidoosterfees’ 21-year milestone, this year they are pulling out all the stops to keep patrons entertained. From world-class dominoes competitions to jazz night on International Jazz Day, theatre, music, art and dance productions and discussions by thought leaders in the media and entertainment industries.
Here’s what you can expect at Suidoosterfees 2024:
21
A festival segment is called “21”, with 21 productions running for 21 minutes for R21 each. Expect genres that vary, from musical productions to poetry, cabaret, dance, comedy and more. Patrons can expect to see investigative journalist turned comedian Marianne Thamme, dance productions by Jazzart Dance Company, Figure of 8 Dance Collective, and the unique production by Dancers of Unmute Dance Theatre, a rendition of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Opera by AGL Opera and theatre by likes of André Terblanché, a jazzy homage to Club Galaxy, Dean Smith, Amanda Strydom, Veronique Jephtas. There will also be an unprecedented production by the talented students from the Koningstheateracademie in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

Jakes Gerwel discussions
The Jakes Gerwel Foundation and ATKV will be hosting several talks and discussions by prominent and esteemed thought leaders on topics such as politics, state capture, gender-based violence and numerous discussions on identity politics by the likes of Caster Semenya, Pieter Odendaal, Ingrid Jones and so many more.
The Jakes Gerwel discussions are in partnership with NB Publishers, Jonathan Ball, Penguin Random House SA, Pan Macmillan SA, Naledi, Flyleaf, Protea Books, Boekdiva, Jacana, Maverick 451, Vriende van Afrikaans and The Foundation for Empowerment through Afrikaans (SBA).
Training and workshops
The beauty of Suidoosterfees is that more than being entertained, the festival also offers training opportunities for up-and-coming thespians. From radio workshops to choir competitions, talent searches, and a theatre package led by Liezl de Kock which will focus on the creation of visual theatre over the three days.
Nati Theatre Festival
The theatre part of Suidoosterfees is jam-packed with a healthy mix of performances by sterling newcomers and theatre veterans alike. Expect to see the likes of Jill Levenberg, Quinton Stuurman, Crystal Donna Roberts, Michele Burgers, Daniel Mpilo Richards, Frank Opperman, Elzabé Zietsman, Sandra Prinsloo and David Viviers.
Music at Suidoosterfees
The musical concert, “21” is the official celebration of Suidoosterfees’ 21-year milestone in 2024. Expect to see Amanda Strydom, Early B, Loukmaan Adams and Jawaahier Petersen as they blow out the birthday candles. The musical options range from opera to performances by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra; ATKV’s Koorgala (Choir Gala) featuring Emo Adams, Jodi Jantjies, the South African Youth Choir; Die Kuier Gospelkonsert (gospel concert) featuring Jonathan Rubain, Anslin Gysman, and Elwira Standili; Burger King’s Konsert van Hoop (Concert of Hope) featuring Tarryn Lamb, Robin Pieters, Salome, and so much more.

Visual art at Suidoosterfees
Expect to be welcomed by visual art on arrival in the Artscape foyer. Expect to see work by Louis Jansen van Vuuren, and Zainab Davids. Other visual art presentations feature Qondiswa James, Eddie Newman, Carin Bester and more.
