Hair care is just as important as skin care – especially in winter. Now that the cold weather is creeping its way in, it’s time to begin prepping for a winter hair care routine. Keeping your hair healthy now will prevent it from drying out and becoming too frizzy when winter officially arrives.
Moisture is key
The name of the winter hair care game is moisture. Swap out your regular shampoo and conditioner for a more hydrating formula. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, or argan oil, which help attract and retain moisture.
Deep conditioning is another hero. Treat your hair to a weekly deep conditioning treatment to replenish lost moisture and boost elasticity.
Seal the deal
While adding moisture is crucial, sealing it in is equally important. After deep conditioning, apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to create a protective barrier. This will shield your hair from the drying effects of the elements and prevent frizz.
Heat with caution
I love my flat iron as much as the next girl, and it’s hard to not use it after a quick blow-dry. But the added winter dryness can wreak havoc on your hair. While you should stay away from your hair dryer too, leaving your hair wet in winter is a no-go – so, instead, dry your hair on a lower heat setting and use a heat protectant.
To tame your locks, try out heatless curls. They can work wonders. Or, put your hair into protective styles, like braids, or a bun (not too tight!) to protect them from the winter winds.
Turn down the heat
Speaking of heat, avoid washing your hair with scorching hot water. You should make this a habit in summer too, but it’s essential in autumn and winter. Hot showers can strip away natural oils, leaving your hair dry and your scalp irritated.
Opt for lukewarm water instead and finish your shower with a cool rinse to seal the hair cuticle and add shine.
Hydrate
Winter weather is dehydrating all around. Our skin and hair suffer dramatically, and it can leave you feeling helpless. Drinking the allotted 8 glasses of water a day can do wonders for your hair health and hydration.
Bonus Tip: Get a pre-winter haircut
Split ends are more noticeable on dry, winter hair. Chopping off all the dead ends and giving your hair some life before winter will keep it healthy for longer.
