At-home toners can be a great tool to revive your colour between salon visits.
‘They work really well if you’re applying the right shade for your hair colour and type,’ says Zoë Irwin, a creative director at John Frieda Salons. ‘But the key is to get advice from a professional.’ Start with a hydrating colour-care shampoo and conditioner – colour fades faster when your hair is dry. Then add a toner if your hair needs a little extra help.
Choosing a toner to match your hair colour
Taking the at-home toner route? Try these for blonde, grey, red and brunette hair:
Blonde
‘If you put something too dark or cool on blonde hair, it can make it look dull and flat,’ says hairstylist Sam Burnett. ‘Opt for
a violet-base blonde shampoo, as it’s less likely to overtone.’ Inoar Absolut Speed Blond Shampoo R440, inoar.co.za has active antioxidants and argan oil to hydrate and nourish.
Grey
Whether your silver hair is natural or comes from a bottle, there are ways to dial up the shine and neutralise yellow tones. Mycro Keratin Tone & Treat Silver Masque R550, mycro-keratin.com, adds coolness back, and the formula is ultra-moisturising, repairing strands simultaneously.
Redhead
Colour-treated red hair is the most difficult shade to maintain. ‘Red molecules are more easily broken down by UV exposure and heat styling,’ explains Zoë. She recommends Wella Color Fresh Copper Glow Mask R510, salon500.co.za. ‘These products are a must-have for red and copper shades to combat fade.’
Brunette
The deep green of Fanola No Red Mask Anti-Red Mask for Dark Brown Hair R506, 27pinkx.co.za, knocks back warm, red tones for brunettes. ‘If you’re nervous about using a colour mask, dilute it with a conditioner,’ advises Zoë. ‘The other option is to leave it on for less time than recommended
