Transitioning into a new life chapter comes with its own ups and downs – in my case, tipping ever-so-closely towards my 30s is heralding as a significant milestone, but the shift leading up to it has sparked a bout of uneasiness, too. The end of another decade, nestling further into this crazy little thing we call adulthood.
Any transition into a new era comes with a barrage of societal pressures and expectations. Although these expectations have become less evident personally over the years, I am learning that life is about where you are and not where you should be. For a moment though, the pressured feeling crept up on me and I wondered, do I qualify to turn 30?
Do I meet the mark for the ‘big 30’ milestone?
Society often paints a picture of where we should be at a certain time in life. This includes having a stable career, being financially independent, possibly being married or in a committed relationship, and even starting a family. These milestones can create a sense of urgency and comparison.
However, it’s essential to remember that everyone’s journey is unique, there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline for life. If it were a measure of skill or experience, I wouldn’t fully be ‘qualified’ to embark on this next chapter, but I’m learning that I don’t need to be.
When it comes to a career
By 30, many people expect to have established their careers and be well on their way to financial stability and independence. I’m proud to say that I am passionate about what I do. Growth in my career has always maintained its high priority on my list. While this may be an admirable quality, I’ve learned that it’s crucial not to rush into decisions that may not align with my passions or values.
Take the time to assess your career path and financial goals realistically. If you need to, consider further education or career shifts that align more closely with your long-term aspirations. Be open to constantly learning and experiencing new opportunities.
When it comes to connections
Whether it’s pressure to settle down or to start a family, these outside influences often end up dictating what happens, and when. In truth, relationships and family planning are deeply personal decisions that should not be rushed or forced.
Currently, I’m not married nor in a relationship, and I don’t have kids. Instead, I am redirecting my time and focus towards myself, my personal growth and nurturing the relationships I have with friends and family.
Remember that finding the right partner or starting a family happens at different stages of life for everyone, there’s no timeline you need to stick to.
Personal growth and well-being
Embarking on a new life chapter is an excellent opportunity to prioritise personal growth and well-being. This includes physical health, mental wellness, and pursuing hobbies or interests that enrich your life. I intentionally invest my time towards mindful self-care practices, fitness goals, creative projects and spending time with loved ones that promote balance and resilience in my life.
