Matric results are a milestone moment, and as a parent or guardian, your support can make all the difference. Whether your child is celebrating or disappointed, here are practical ways to help them navigate this crucial time:
1. Start ahead with reassurance
On and even before receiving any results (expected to be announced at a national level in South Africa on 13 January 2025) remind your child that no matter the outcome, you’re proud of the effort they’ve put in.
Keep the morning calm and focused, and avoid comments that might increase their anxiety, such as overly emphasising the importance of their results. A simple “You’ve done your best, and we’ll tackle the next steps together” can be reassuring.
2. Be present without hovering
Give your child space to process their results, but make sure they know you’re there for them. If they want to share their news immediately, listen attentively. If they need time alone, respect that too. Balance being supportive with not overwhelming them.
3. Celebrate effort, not just results
Regardless of the marks, celebrate the hard work your child has put in over the past year. Acknowledge the challenges they overcame, such as long study hours or balancing academics with other responsibilities. Consider planning a special family dinner or outing to mark this significant achievement, no matter the result.
4. If results are disappointing, focus on solutions
Should your child fall short of their expectations, avoid phrases like “What happened?” or “I’m so disappointed.” Instead, shift the conversation to solutions. Talk about supplementary exams, rewriting specific subjects, or exploring alternative educational pathways. Many colleges offer bridging courses that act as a springboard to excellent opportunities.
5. Set external boundaries
Protect your child from external pressures by setting boundaries with family and friends regarding discussions about results. Share information only with your child’s consent to create a safe and supportive environment.
6. Be aware of their wellbeing
If your child seems overly anxious, withdrawn, or tearful, take their emotions seriously. Offer comfort and consider involving a professional if their distress doesn’t ease. SADAG (The South African Depression and Anxiety Group) is a valuable resource for counseling and support.
7. Focus on their bright future
Help your child shift their attention from the results to their next steps. For those who achieved their goals, discuss university or college preparations. For those with unexpected outcomes, research alternative plans together, like applying to institutions with open spaces or pursuing a gap year for skill-building.
8. Share real-life stories
If your child feels discouraged, share examples of people who didn’t excel academically but went on to achieve great success. Stories like these can inspire them to see setbacks as opportunities for growth and resilience.
Remember, your child values your support more than you might realise. Stay calm, be patient, and remind them that success isn’t defined by one piece of paper but by the determination to keep moving forward.
