The beloved crisps, known for their signature light green packaging, officially returned on 3 March, ending years of longing for the flavour many considered a household favourite. Their disappearance sparked an outcry, with consumers flooding social media with pleas and petitions, hoping to bring back the tangy, creamy taste they had sorely missed.
When the flavour was initially discontinued, the backlash was immediate, with fans demanding an explanation. PepsiCo South Africa, the company behind Lay’s, responded that product ranges are regularly evaluated based on research and sales performance. However, the undeniable passion from consumers ultimately proved too strong to ignore.
A Change Organisation-led campaign helped amplify the calls for the return of the much-loved crisps, with thousands of supporters sharing their nostalgia-fuelled memories and unwavering desire to see the flavour reinstated. Their efforts paid off when PepsiCo officially confirmed that the crisps were back for good.
“We all love a good comeback – especially when it’s legendary!” the company announced, thanking South Africans for their persistence and loyalty. Adding to the excitement, they also revealed that the Argentinian creamy pepper steak flavour had returned, further rewarding consumers’ dedication.
As news of the comeback spread, social media erupted with celebratory posts. Enthusiastic fans took to Twitter to share their excitement, with one user exclaiming, “Sour cream and onion Lay’s are back! Give me the whole box right now,” while another joked, “I didn’t even know they were gone, but I’m glad they’re back!”
Beyond just a snack, the return of Lay’s sour cream and onion crisps represents a community victory—a reminder that consumer voices matter and that sometimes, the things we love do return to us. Now, South Africans can once again savour the flavour that unites them, one crunchy bite at a time.
