Singer-songwriter Lira chats about being accountable, her best quality, and the inspiration behind her song Heartbeat. Read more about Lira has to say below:
The best advice I’ve ever been given is “Be accountable”. It empowers me to do something about a situation rather than just throw my hands up in the air in surrender or feel sorry for myself.
There’s nothing better than getting lost in a good book. I’m fascinated with real life stories. I revel in discovering new things and exploring different perspectives, so I usually grab a biography or something business-orientated. I prefer to take in more fictional things in movie form, specifically fantasy – if I’m going to do fiction, might as well go all out!

Determination is essential to getting ahead. It’s probably my best quality. I’m not afraid to put myself out there and fight for what I think I deserve. At the same time, it’s made me really brave, which is Robin’s favourite quality of mine –I’ve done some gutsy things he says he’d never do.
I worry that I won’t have the strength and energy to get through everything in a day. I can lose sleep over it, which is funny because that’s the one thing that gives me the stamina to keep going! Getting my eight hours each night helps me feel my absolute best, and is the best medicine for keeping my voice pitch perfect.

My music is inspired by the world around me and the people in it. My song Heartbeat was written with Robin in mind. My sound has evolved over the years, but I still appreciate my early work because it reflects where I was at that stage of my life, and the challenges I faced. I gain a lot from the music of other artists, including Sade and Nina Simone; artists I grew up listening to. They had something to say with their music, which I try achieve with my own.
Lira’s latest album, Born Free is out now.
