Hair Tips From an Expert: The Do’s and Don’ts
Stay Calm
Do say ‘Ohm’… Now’s the time to not fuss too much about how your hair looks, so don’t worry about washing your hair as often as you usually would. Instead, try to stretch out the time between washes to allow the natural oils to build and moisturise your hair strands.
The bonus? Doing this now may result in your hair adjusting once we return to our ‘normal lives’ so that don’t need to wash as often anymore!

Brush Your Hair
…every day. Apart from the fact that brushing your hair is a good way to remove loose strands we lose naturally (about 100 hairs per day), brushing is a fab way to distribute the natural oils we produce through the hair shaft, right to the ends, resulting in hair that is healthier and has a shinier appearance.
But, how does it work?
Gentle brushing increases shine by flattening the cuticles (the outer layer of the hair shaft), allowing hair to become more reflective.
It also stimulates the capillaries of the scalp, increasing blood circulation and transporting oxygen and nutrients into the hair follicles.
Some say this may even encourage hair growth, strengthening the roots and decreasing hair loss. Who would’ve guessed?
We find that using a natural bristled hairbrush like Ghd Oval Dressing Brush, R420, is the best way to stimulate our scalps natural oils.

Take Your Time
With a little more time available for disposal, get the best out of those nourishing treatments you don’t usually have time to leave on long enough.
One of our favourite things? Applying a luxurious hair oil.
Focus on the damaged areas (slather it on!), and leave on overnight. Then rinse out the next morning while in the shower for silky soft strands.
Try Inoar Virgin Coconut Oil, R450 for 200ml, which is pure and refined allowing for deep penetration without forming an oily film.
w&h Hair Tip: Apply to your skin, too – it smells divine!
Don’t Cut Your Own Hair
Step away from the scissors! It’s best to leave hair-cutting to the professionals. #LockDownHair is not a good look…

Gently Does It
Steer clear of the ‘facelift ponytail‘. When tying up your hair, try not to pull it too tightly or secure with a hair-tie that’s too small.
According to award-winning hairstylist, Lisa Ivone, the facelift ponytail is an absolute no-no. “Too much tension on the hair can make it prone to snapping.”
So when tying your hair up, make sure to use soft scrunchies (so hot right now), silk scarves and stretchy bobbles instead, or try plaiting your hair, which is also a great way to hide any unwanted roots that are peaking out.
Try Invisibobble Original in Crystal Clear, R95 for three.

Leave The Heat For Later
One sure-fire way to maintain and improve the condition of your hair while not being able to visit your stylist? Stepping away from the hairdryer! If you can, try to avoid using any form of heat when styling your hair whilst at home. Heat can cause damage to the hair strands when not applied appropriately, or with good heat protection.
For curly girls, excessive use of heat can permanently damage the hair bonds, leaving hair dull and lifeless with a lacklustre curl pattern. So, if you’re not having an important video call today, rather let your hair air-dry naturally!
w&h Hair Tip: Make small plaits while hair is slightly damp and air dry for soft, beachy waves. And while you’re at it, add a spritz of texturising spray to amp up the beachy look
Try the classic Toni & Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray, R149,99 for 200ml.
