The last time we saw Lady Gaga on the silver screen, she portrayed the tenacious Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. Now, Gaga is taking her acting chops to new filmscapes, set to feature in a genre we’ve never seen her in before, but certainly should have – that of superheroes and villains.
Emphasis on the latter. Gaga has confirmed her role in the second instalment of the Joker, set to shine alongside Oscar winner, Joaquin Phoenix, who landed the golden tribute for this very role in the first film.
It’s been long-questioned and suspected as to who would claim the role of Harley Quinn for this rendition of the famous DC franchise. Margot Robbie famously played the Joker’s wildcard leading lady and has been hugely associated with the role, even garnering her own spin-off film Birds of Prey.
However, given that this Joker instalment is set to be a musical, it only makes sense that Gaga would get the call.
Gaga revealed her role in a teaser posted to social media set to the tune of ‘Cheek to Cheek’ with a silhouette animation.
Queen of suspense, Gaga’s caption aloofly commented “Joker. Folie à Deux 10.04.24” in light of the film’s release date.

‘Folie à Deux’ refers to a mental disorder that two people share and experience simultaneously, a fitting love letter for the Joker and Harley Quinn indeed.
The Joker, directed by Todd Phillips was a smash hit, raking in over $1 billion (over R16 billion) worldwide as per Variety. Following the trend that tells the villain’s side of the story, we got to see why the nasty Joker became who he became in an emotional telling that touched on mental illness. The film became something of a cult classic and earned 11 Academy Award nominations.
