Every once in a while, a trend comes along that merges a few of our favourite things: good company, food, and a little creativity.
The ‘Rainbow Picnic Challenge’ is the perfect excuse for a picnic get-together in a creative foodie curation. Themed picnics with a side of creative juices? We’re packing our baskets already.
Recently, a few local ladies have been a hit for documenting their version of the challenge. Armed with snacks and dressed in their designated colours, they painted the town rainbow.
The premise of their challenge is simple: pick a few guests, pick a colour for everyone to dress up in and match your food and drink contributions to your lucky colour. Not only does the challenge spur a little direction for your picnic party servings, but it also serves as a fabulous reason to bring a few of your nearest and dearest together as one delightful rainbow.
While you can opt for the other, simpler ‘Rainbow Picnic Challenge’ recipe that sees each guest bring something to the tune of the rainbow’s colours (ie: everyone brings a treat that’s yellow, orange and so on) here’s how to go the full nine-yards:
Here’s how to enjoy a ‘Rainbow Picnic Challenge’ of your own:
1. Pick your picnic palette
The picnic organiser has the all-important task of delegating each guest a colour. You can opt to randomise as many colours as there will be guests or let everyone choose their own shade.
2. Decide on the menu
Now that everyone has their colour picked out for them, it’s time to choose the food and drink pairings to match your shade. Since it’s a picnic, pretty much any food offering goes so long as it’s ready to travel. The all-important task at this point is to make sure everyone’s on the same page of the overarching menu.
You can opt for an anything-goes menu, but you might be met with some bringing more to the party than others. If you’re more for uniformity, set a menu. Ie: an appetiser, main and dessert. If it’s all about snacking, then set a budget that everyone agrees on, before you have one person bringing a lonesome packet of chips and someone else bringing a full-on feast.
Additionally, you might want to check on your guest’s dietary requirements and allergies. Nothing rains on a picnic parade quite like an allergic reaction to the peanut dish that took you hours to make.
3. Pick your location
Botanical Gardens make for perfect picnic settings. If you’re closer to the sea and the weather is behaving, try a beach picnic! Wine farms and lush greenery near lakes are also always a delight. If you’re not feeling like a public area, you can even kit out your garden.
4. Make sure the colours and the cuisine match
We’ve matched countless things to our wardrobes before – from nails to bags and shoes. Now it’s time to put your colour-matching to the test, foodie style.
If green is your colour, think avocado or cucumber sandwiches, guacamole dips for nachos or pistachio ice cream. Most meals don’t come in a single colour, but the point is to be creative – even if it means choosing a main character colour for your dish with the others serving as supporting acts. Remember, it’s dubbed a challenge for a reason! Exercise those creative muscles.
5. Enjoy, and don’t forget to share the snaps
