If you watched Inventing Anna, you probably know that the show didn’t sit well with everyone, including the real Anna Delvy who claimed that she wasn’t so “brazen and shameless,” as Cosmopolitan shared.
Now, Rachel DeLoache Williams whose life was also depicted in the show by actress Katie Lowes has also shared her opinions of Inventing Anna and has taken to sue Netflix.
Williams has reportedly sued Netflix on the basis of defamation of character. According to the BBC, her lawsuit claims the show depicted her as a “greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person”.
The former Vanity Fair photo editor had, in real life, shared her side of the story in her book My friend Anna.
When it came to Netflix’s production led by Shonda Rhimes, Williams allegedly didn’t cooperate with Netflix.
According to the complaint shared by Deadline, the show also made Williams out to be a “cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person.”
And, as viewers will know from watching, the complaint isn’t far off.
The legal action she filed read as follows “As a result of Netflix’s false portrayal of her as a vile and contemptible person, Williams was subjected to a torrent of online abuse, negative in-person interactions, and pejorative characterisations in podcasts, etc.” More to this document stated that she had received thousands of abusive messages and that the ‘catastrophic damage to Williams’ reputation was completely avoidable”.
It continued to say “She does not challenge Netflix’s right to have an unpleasant character in the Series, but if it chose to base the character on herself, and to portray the character negatively, it should have given the character a fictitious name and changed the character’s identifying details so no one would believe that the character portable ‘of and concerning the real Rachel Williams.”
Vanity Fair shared that Williams’ lawyer stated to the publication that a key factor in the defamation suit was also based on all the information shared about the real Williams’ life, including her home neighbourhood and employer.
Netflix has not responded to a request for comment.
