That one piece of ceramic art (which you’ve been gushing over for weeks) may hold the key to completing the overall look and feel of your space. Whether it’s a gorgeous set of dinnerware resting on a large open shelf, or a vase holding flowers kept on your dresser – there’s always that ‘one’ special piece you will covet. Finding these one-of-a-kind pieces is an immersive journey, especially when it comes to scouting independent local artists and committing to a piece. I’ve spent months searching for my ‘perfect’ ceramic accent. Along the way, I’ve discovered some incredible local ceramic artists. Let’s have a look at their work:
Lise West
Lise began her ceramics journey 10 years ago with her focus honed on art and functional design. Lise incorporates the simplicity and honesty of African and European folk art in her ceramics, inspired by folk artists who told stories of their surroundings. These musings, combined with Lise’s pattern work – inspired by pattern use in African design – makes for a wonderfully quirky and delightful range of ceramics fit for any colourful creative’s abode. I’ve ordered a set of trinket bowls from her and she is as wonderful to chat to, as her work is to view.

Lucinda Mudge
You’ll get lost in the rich colours and intricate details of Lucinda Mudge’s ceramic vases. She draws inspiration from a wide range of references like cartoons, pop songs, fabric designs, and art deco vase patterns. Her work echoes a sense of balance between the mundane and the magical. Lucinda’s choice for the vase as her canvas comes from its warm, welcoming and affirming nature in the home.

Farah Hernandez
I fell in love with Farah’s ‘al-hurra’ range, which came as a search for freedom. Freedom from others’ definitions and measurements of beauty, freedom from fears and complexes, freedom from boxes and ideas about what it means to be a woman. Through the reclaiming and loving of the female body, we slowly start to reclaim our freedom, to de-objectify women and our femininity. We claim the power to give new meaning to those words for ourselves. I just love the message of this. This range has since sold out but it is worth keeping an eye out for Farah’s upcoming works.
