Jada Pinkett Smith has had many narratives tied to her throughout her decades in the spotlight.
2Pac’s dear friend, Will Smith’s wife, the daughter of two addicts, a mother of two superstars, a powerhouse actress, the reason behind the Oscar’s slap, an alopecia warrior, a ‘petty’ drug dealer and an empowered talk show host – and then some.
Multi-faceted is an understatement when it comes to Jada, especially from the outsider’s perspective; a perspective from which her stories are often told.
In recent news, there’s a new narrative joining the mix – her own posed to be straight-shooting.
Dey Street Books has announced a memoir on the cards dubbed a “no holds barred” retelling of her multiple journeys, and pop culture enthusiasts are already planning their unpackings of the literature.
Her tome is set to detail her life in all its different facets. From growing up in Baltimore under the ‘guidance’ of two addicts (her parents) to her flare for theatre and acting which would change the course of her life, all the way to her deep friendship with Tupac Shakur, which would thrust her into the public gaze, as well as her complex love story with Will Smith and the joy of motherhood.
A press statement shares: “Jada chronicles lessons learned in the course of a difficult but riveting journey — a rollercoaster ride from the depths of suicidal depression to the heights of personal rediscovery and the celebration of authentic feminine power.”
The statement further added that the telling will also look at her state of crisis at 40, where she “recounts the excruciating choices she was forced to make to redefine her life in every way.”
Given her battle with alopecia areata, it’s likely that the book will also touch on that experience and shed further light on what happened during the Oscars slap-down that saw Will Smith banned from the awards for a decade.
While the release date isn’t specific, it’s suspected that the memoir will be available in late 2023.
