Three days ago, Oscar-winning star Jared Leto took to Instagram to announce that he will be producing and starring in a biopic about the late German fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019 at 85. News of the film broke shortly after The Met Gala’s theme for 2023 was revealed – Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
In his Instagram post announcing the upcoming film, Leto says the following:
“When we came together with the Karl Lagerfeld team, we immediately shared a creative vision of doing a respectful ode to Karl while pushing the artistic boundaries of what a biopic can be.”

Leto will be producing the film (which has not yet been named) alongside his partner, Emma Ludbrook, and three of Lagerfeld’s closest and most trusted business partners who have been named executive producers on the film. Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of Karl Lagerfeld’s label, Caroline Lebar who worked closely as an advisor to Lagerfeld and Sébastien Jondeau – Karl Lagerfeld’s personal assistant and bodyguard for over two decades.
Leto told Women’s Wear Daily:
“I feel like this is a full-circle moment and Karl would be proud of what we are doing,”
The biopic will reportedly focus on key relationships in Lagerfeld’s life, with Leto promising to portray one of the most notable faces in fashion “as honest as possible,” honing in on the late Lagerfeld’s own penchant for unpredictability.
Will Leto’s portrayal live up to the revered fashion icon’s legacy, or will his performance fall short? If the past is anything to go by, Leto already has notable experience under his belt with his famous portrayal of Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci released in 2021.
Plus, the Oscar-winning star does have a fashionable flare about him, perhaps we can expect to be pleasantly surprised.
