Earlier this week, The Duchess of Sussex, better known by her maiden name Meghan Markle, dropped four bombshells during a candid interview with Variety magazine.
In the interview, Meghan opens up about her family’s grieving for the late Queen, her involvement with Netflix’s upcoming docuseries about herself and Harry, the future of her acting career, and the days following the couples’ controversial Oprah interview.
Meghan opens up about grieving Queen Elizabeth II’s death
Meghan reflects on the outpouring of love and support shown towards their family after Queen Elizabeth’s passing, and says she’s grateful she was able to be there for her husband, Harry (grandson of the late Queen), to support him through the loss. In the interview, Meghan marvels at the legacy Queen Elizabeth has left behind:
“What’s so beautiful is to look at the legacy that his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts. Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like.”
“It’s been a complicated time, but my husband, ever the optimist, said, “Now she’s reunited with her husband.”
The upcoming Netflix docuseries about the couple is ‘not how they would have told it’
The Oscar-nominated director of the upcoming docuseries about Harry and Meghan’s story, Liz Garbus, has received notable accolades for her previous works, including Love, Marilyn and What Happened, Miss Simone? However, Meghan says the documentary is not exactly as they would have told it.
“It’s nice to be able to trust someone with our story — a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired — even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it. But that’s not why we’re telling it. We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens.”
Meghan declares the end of her acting career
When asked if she would ever get back into her previous career as an actress, the Duchess of Sussex promptly remarked:
“No. I’m done. I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely not.”
Meghan talks about the days following the controversial Oprah interview
Meghan also reflects on the days preceding the couple’s controversial interview with Oprah before Archie was born.
“Even before the interview, I hadn’t been out because I was so pregnant… ”
Meghan goes on to say how she hadn’t been in the public eye for a long stretch, even after their controversial interview on Oprah.
A week after the interview was aired, Meghan attended renowned journalist Gloria Steinhem’s birthday bash. She shared that she was not expecting an extravagant show-up but a “small and intimate birthday lunch.”
“I envisioned it being us eating sandwiches in this cottage she was staying at. Instead, it was an extravaganza — by the way, as she deserves. But I hadn’t really seen people in a long time, and the interview had come out maybe a week before. Walking into a room alone is never easy for me, and I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable. But before I could let my uncertainty linger, Pamela Adlon came up to me and greeted me with such warmth and kindness. She toured me around the room, and at every turn, more generosity and love was felt.”
