2022’s scriptwriters couldn’t help but throw in a plot twist…
Donald Trump has announced he’s running for president once again. This time, the twice-impeached former president declared that he doesn’t just want to make America great again, but “glorious” too.
Heralding declarations from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Trump’s campaign relied on nostalgic rhetoric from his four years in the White House. The announcement was accused of pushing false narratives by critics, but Trump made some accusations of his own, which largely made up his speech.
His main accusation (read, conspiracy theory) saw Trump accuse China of sticking its nose in the 2020 elections to defeat him, per Vice News, which spiralled into his thoughts on America’s “rigid and corrupt system”; a system he threatened with “a storm of fire” as CNN reports.
Trump’s accusations ranged from gas prices to sea levels rising, many of which have been deemed false claims.
However, with a strong hold on many Republican loyalists, the public has been divided on how seriously his campaign should be taken.
One thing that most experts have highlighted is that the real barrier for Trump right now are legal matters.
As Martin Pengelly outlines: “a new twist is the sheer size and scale of the legal jeopardy that now surrounds him. Federal and state authorities are investigating Trump’s personal, political and financial conduct, and that of his business empire.”
Other sources speculate that his decision to race to the White House is motivated by hopes that it’ll protect Trump from these very investigations.
