As we know, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is the skin’s best friend that has mushroomed into an obsession in the beauty industry, due to its hydrating and plumping skin properties. What we don’t often hear, is that HA boasts so many benefits for your hair and scalp, too!
With summer hot on our heels, now is the perfect time to start incorporating HA into your haircare regime; if you want luscious, healthy looking, hydrated hair ready for summer fun!
Hyaluronic, for hair?
Hyaluronic acid comes in different forms, Sodium Hyaluronate (SH) is the most common form used in haircare. If you don’t find HA listed as an ingredient in your haircare product, look out for SH on the bottle.
Reasons to love Hyaluronic Acid for your hair
HA is not a moisturiser, it’s a ‘humectant’ which means it works by retaining water and drawing moisture toward the skin. In skincare, we already know that retaining moisture does wonders for youthful, plump looking skin, we’ve even seen what it does for nails. The same goes for hair! Moisture is key.
Hydrates the hair
HA (SH in haircare) has the ability to deeply hydrate your hair and scalp, without causing oiliness or product build-up. Your hair won’t feel heavy. HA is suitable for all hair types and textures!
Reduces frizziness
Hyaluronic acid also helps to seal the cuticle of each hair root, which prevents unwanted moisture which causes frizzy hair and curl shrinkage.
Plumps the hair
Hyaluronic acid may be used to help plump up dry, damaged hair. This plumping effect could be used for added volume at the roots.
Hydrates the scalp
Hyaluronic acid benefits hair as well as the scalp. A hydrated scalp is a happy scalp. HA reduces the risk of product build-up, dandruff, and sun damage to the scalp and skin.
HA binds moisture to skin on the scalp, allowing collagen to grow, and keeping the scalp hydrated.
How to use Hyaluronic Acid for Hair
- Apply it straight to your scalp, as a pre-shampoo treatment before shampooing using circular motions.
- Apply on wet hair, after showering.
Pro tip: Hyaluronic Acid needs water to activate and thrive! As we said, moisture is key.
