SA has rallied together for a special cause after hearing about Maureen, a retired nurse currently in the final stages of terminal cancer. Maureen has two beautiful dogs, Mandy and Monty, who are in good health and have been by her side every step of the way.
However, Maureen has been faced with an incredibly tough decision. In coming to terms with losing her battle with cancer, Maureen had been desperately seeking a loving home for her two precious fur babies.
Paws R Us rallied SA together to help
The last thing Maureen wanted was for her dogs to land up at a shelter – a loving home was her only choice, but she couldn’t do it alone. Last year, she reached out to Paws R Us, who set up a day to meet the dogs and create social media posts to connect the pups to a suited family who would be prepared to take them in.
The fur babies’ bios read as follows:
“Monty is an extremely sensitive soul, with a heart as big as the ocean, and once he feels safe, he simply adores his human.”
“Mandy is a little more confident and appears to be the leader of the duo. When separated for even a few minutes, these two search for each other immediately. They are about to face a big change in their lives – and we need a gentle, patient, savvy human family who will embrace them with love.”
In November 2022, there had still been no interest in Mandy and Monty. Maureen started to feel worried and anxious that time was running out. All she wanted, was for her dogs to find a safe, loving home.
Then, in that same month, a lovely couple named Glenda and Berndt, reached out to Paws R Us. Reports from the organisation say:
“Out of nowhere, came Glenda and Berndt. They made contact, and asked if they could meet Maureen, Monty and Mandy. And if memory serves, the first visit was in November, and it went so well.”
The Glenda, Berndt and Maureen connected, the couple and dogs connected, and Paws R Us were grateful to have weaved a ‘catch-net’ for the 2 dogs who needed love and stability, when the time arrived for their goodbyes.
Getting to know one another
Upon their first visit to the couple, the dogs couldn’t appear more comfortable! Maureen found great relief and comfort in getting to know Glenda and Berndt, who have committed to taking her dogs in as forever family, once she has crossed over.
Glenda and Berndt have visited Maureen, Mandy and Monty two more times. And Maureen has visited the couples’ home to see the garden where Mandy and Monty will retire.
“The adoption paperwork is in, and the home-check has been approved. No-one knows the timing of this adoption. It has been a testament to love from the get-go, a coming together of humans to offer blessings to a person who so deserves the support, who has given her whole life to caring for the sick and the frail, and whose turn it now is to be buoyed by care. And, last but not least, it is a testament to the love of dogs, and a uniquely beautiful commitment to Monty and Mandy.”
“What an honour and privilege to journey with Maureen, Monty, Mandy, Glenda, Berndt, Lily (their dog), and the cats.” says Paws R Us.
Maureen is so happy knowing that her beloved dogs will have a home when she goes. Glenda and Berndt have brought Maureen peace, and have given Mandy and Monty the chance to cope better when the loss does come around.
