When it comes to finding the right skin treatment products for you and mastering your skincare routine, we asked the professionals for some advice…
“I try to keep skin treatment simple,” says nonsurgical aesthetic specialist Dr Tapan Patel. “Think of it like this: at one end, you have a cleanser and at the other end, some decent sun protection. In-between, you can pick and choose products according to your needs. This will vary from person to person, from time to time, but can include an exfoliant, antioxidant serum and a good moisturiser.”

The right skin treatment is all about the timing
Dr Patel also believes that the right skin treatment is about knowing what products work together, how they benefit your skin, and the order in which to use them is very important when selecting the most effective skincare routine for you. “My advice”, he says, “is to pay attention when looking in the mirror and trust your instincts. Never underestimate your skin’s ability to tell you what it loves and hates. If you sense something is too harsh, wait a couple of days then try again.
One thing is certain, your skin is a living, breathing organ that’s self-repairing 24/7. Respect it. You can tell (and feel) the difference between tingling and stinging. If something makes you irritated (retinol needs a fair few days to acclimatise), be prepared to stop for a while and give it another go while helping your skin get in the zone.
Choose the right skin treatment regime for you
My recommended routine is a guide from years of experience. I prefer a ‘less is more’ approach, because I have very sensitive skin that reacts rapidly. Experimenting is key to finding what works best for you. Be aware of how your skin reacts and adjust the quantity or frequency of your skin treatments products to best suit you.”
Your lifestyle matters too
Without a doubt, your lifestyle affects the rate that ageing occurs. “Every cell in your body needs to be nourished and fed with nutrients. Your body needs water, as your liver and kidneys rely on it to help them eliminate toxins. Alcohol and smoking add to the toxins, and also starve your body and skin of oxygen. This has a long-term effect over the years, weakening the skin, which results in more redness, pigmentation, and loss of collagen,” says skincare facialist, Debbie Thomas.
