We’ve spoken about everything you should try this year- from hair trends to fashion, and even décor. But we haven’t discussed what we’re leaving behind in 2024 – more specifically, the outdated hair trends that won’t be making a comeback anytime soon.
This year, we’re tossing out high-maintenance everything and opting for easy, more natural looks. (Unless it’s the Mob Wife aesthetic – but that’s another story). Let’s take a look at what hair trends we’re ditching in 2024.
Extended extensions
That’s right – the extra-long hair era is fading. In 2024, we’re saying goodbye to those extensions and opting for more natural lengths and textures.
While long locks will always be in fashion (at least, in my opinion) the almost unattainable length that extensions give you just isn’t it anymore. So, save your money and the reality of headaches, and rather opt to grow out your natural hair or rock a bob.
Bye balayage
Zellennials (those who just don’t make the Millennial or Gen Z age groups) will probably shudder at the thought of saying ditching their balayage (or ombre) colour style. I mean, I just refreshed my blonde balayage.
But, before you come at me with pitchforks – it’s the intense, high contrast, blocky balayage that we’re ditching this year. Caramel low lights are all the rage this year, along with the softer highlights that don’t look like streaks of blond or brown that belong solely in the 2000s.
Blunt bobs
Yes – bobs are definitely back in. Especially the 90s-esque style. But the blunt, boring bob is one of the outdated hair trends for this year.
If you want to rock the short look, rather go for layered bobs that offer lots of movement and volume. This is a fun look that’s low maintenance and still chic.

Anything mullet
Speaking of funky hairstyles, we have to talk about the mullet (shudder). This ’80s relic has been trending on and off in recent years, and needless to say, I am so glad it’s not a trend this year.
While the mullet, or any variation of the party-in-the-back hairstyle, has the textured, funky look that’s making waves this year, it doesn’t align with the low-maintenance yet chic vibe that’s trending in 2024.
If you want short hair – refer back to bobs.
No more platinum blonde
Ladies (and gentlemen, and everyone else for that matter) we can finally stop frying our hair to get that coveted Daenerys Targaryen look. That’s right – platinum blonde is out.
Instead, we’re going for more natural blonde hues that don’t make as much of a statement. Think, soft honey blondes, or dirty blonde vibes that pair perfectly with the so-called “old-money” aesthetic.
