Toenail health is important, even in winter, when you’ve got your feet wrapped up most of the time. Dryness, fungal infections and ingrown toenails don’t hibernate, so here are some tips for protecting your toenails in winter.
1. Keep your toenails clean, dry them well
After being out in the snow or rain, make sure to dry your feet and nails thoroughly. Moisture can contribute to fungal infections, so change out of damp socks and shoes promptly.
2. Trim your toenails correctly
Trim your toenails straight across and not too short. This helps prevent ingrown toenails. Use proper nail clippers and avoid tearing or cutting into the corners.
3. Moisturise your toes regularly
Apply a moisturising lotion or cream to your feet and nails daily, especially after bathing or showering. This helps prevent dryness and cracking. You can apply cuticle oil to your toenails, too.
4. Choose the right footwear
Opt for shoes and boots that fit properly and provide enough room for your toes. Tight footwear can cause pressure on the nails and lead to discomfort or ingrown nails.
5. Wear breathable socks
Choose socks made of natural fibers like cotton or wool blends that wick moisture away from the skin. This helps keep your feet dry and reduces the risk of fungal infections.
6. Protect your feet
When outdoors, wear waterproof shoes or boots to protect your feet from cold and moisture. This also prevents trauma to the toenails from accidental bumps or impacts.
7. Monitor your toenail health
Regularly inspect your toenails for any changes in colour, texture, or thickness. Consult a podiatrist if you notice any abnormalities or persistent issues.
Take care of your feet, and they’ll take you far, even in the coldest winter.
