Call it my typical Sagittarius nature or the inevitability of the ‘new year, new me’ mindset kicking in early, but as we dip into the holidays and approach a new year, I’ve been yearning for a change…
If I wanted to grace 2023 with a toned bod I should have started months ago. But that’s not the objective here – we’re comfortable with our bodies and will be greeting 2023 with every curve in tow. I’m looking for a transformation that only marks a morning off the calendar but gives us me all the renewal I need to start again fresh.
Did somebody say…hair transformation?
Wyatt Hairdressing & Barbering, in Johannesburg
And what better spot to go to than the best sustainable hair salon in Jozi? Wyatt Hairdressing & Barbering, located at 44 Stanley in Joburg was immediately my salon of choice.
Not only are they kinder on the planet, but every stylist, colourist and beautician there has been working at their craft for years. From hair transformations to spa treatments, skin peels, lashes, eyebrows and nails – they’ve got everything you could need for a day of self care spoils.
Booking
Booking my transformation was simple. I popped Wyatt a message on WhatsApp, explaining my scenario. Minutes later, I received a call to chat about my hair. They asked questions, and wanted to know more about the current state of my locks, and what I would like to do, so that they could pair me with a suitable stylist.
Once we had decided on a suitable match, I booked my appointment via Booksy and eagerly awaited transformation day, impressed by the fact that they went the extra mile to place me with the suitable stylist beforehand.
Consulting
When I arrived on the day, I was bewildered by the atmosphere at the salon. A gorgeous, fresh, open space with hanging plants everywhere. After being greeted by a tow of smiles I was brought to my seat, where my stylist, Chellaine, came over to talk me through the possibilities and process of my big transformation.
Whilst we chatted about the possibilities of shifting tones from my unruly red to a natural brunette/blonde balayage, I was offered a cappuccino and a hand massage. It’s the small details like these that make a salon worth visiting. When you know they’ve got your comfort in mind, you’re in good hands.
The transformation
I walked into Wyatt with a head full of unruly red locks, and left looking like Hollywood.
From stripping out my box-job red, to picking out the exact tones for my balayage and treating my hair with an array of eco-friendly Davines products all the way from Italy, every step of the process was enjoyable. My stylist, Chellaine, took great care in guiding me through what she was doing.
Once my hair had been washed, coloured and cut, it was time for styling. I had asked for Chellaine to give me a few styling tips while she was at it, and she happily obliged, talking me through the entire styling process. This was the most helpful experience I’ve ever had at a salon…
A hair transformation is great, but you need to maintain the look for the feeling to really last. Instead of leaving me to my own devices (a novice stylist at best) Chellaine made sure to guide me through helpful tips and pointers that would make it simpler for me to style my hair on my own at home.
Hollywood moments
Not even three hours later it was time for the big reveal. Chellaine excitedly spun me around in my chair, keen to show me the magic she had just pulled off. An elegant, sophisticated look with glam waves, boasting gorgeous highlights of golden blonde blended perfectly with my natural colour, completely revived.
I had been going through a bump in my confidence for months, but the moment I looked into the mirror once Wyatt had worked there magic, I felt beautiful, and my confidence was restored. It all started with the decision to do something for me, before the year ended.
And that’s your cue. Don’t start the new year feeling low on confidence. Opt for a boost and do something for you. My advice on how to do so? Do something fun with your hair, and have a glass of bubbly while you’re at it!
