Korea has no short history in skincare. In fact, the modern ‘skincare routine’ we know today found its very roots in Korea, hundreds of years ago, dating back to as early as 692. Now, in the present day, Korea’s the leading force in skincare technology globally.
In Korean culture, skincare isn’t a luxury, it’s an integral part of day-to-day life. Like brushing your teeth, or taking a shower. Korean people hold plump, youthful-looking skin in the highest regard. Because of the culture’s fleshed out, ‘skin-first’ ‘philosophy, their skincare technology has skyrocketed a good five years ahead of Western and European technologies today, experts say.
Why so high-tech?
Korea best exemplifies using powerful, effective ingredients in their skincare. Take Gotu Kola for example. A plant extract that is gentle and smooth on the skin, works remarkably for redness and sensitivity, with antioxidant benefits too. Or green tea extract! This miracle tincture, which is really difficult to find outside of Korea, moisturizes the skin and is a great antioxidant with anti-ageing properties.
Another reason for K-beauty’s rapid growth is its advance in UV technologies. Every seasoned skincare fanatic knows that having a good SPF is the first step to good skincare. Korea has advanced way ahead of Western and European UV technology in that regard. If you’re like me and you’re just getting to know your skin a little better, I highly recommend trying a Korean SPF that protects your skin and doesn’t leave a white cast, as most sunscreens do. There are thousands of quality K-beauty products out there…but where to find them?
Where to find K-beauty
One downfall of K-Beauty in SA is the lack of accessibility. With products that have not yet been regulated or approved in our own market, it’s next to impossible to find K-beauty on shelves. Not to worry, though. One local brand, Glow Theory, is focused on importing and selling a wide range of products online.
Not only are they one of the only places you can buy K-beauty from in SA currently, but their website and socials also give you all the info you need to start your k-beauty journey, addressing your skincare concerns directly. Just in case that isn’t enough, we’ve rounded up our list of holy grail K-beauty products:
