While the clothes do most of the talking on the catwalk, we couldn’t help but notice what a big part of the conversation beauty claimed at London Fashion Week AW22. Some looks were loud, some quiet and many reserved only for those who attend outlandish parties. But some beauty trends are worthy of noting as nods to what is to come, off the runway.
Fresh foundation
As we predicted earlier this year, full coverage is becoming less coveted in foundation. This was made clear on a few of the London Fashion Week AW22 catwalks like Erdem, 16Arlington and Nensi Dojaka who all followed this beauty trend. NARS Global Artistry Director, Jane Richardson, called the look they created for Erdem an ‘informal complexion’. Freckles on show, dewy skin and barely-there foundation is here to stay!

No-fuss hair
The main hair trend of London Fashion Week AW22 was keeping it out of the way. Erdem pulled hair back neatly or covered heads in sequins.

Full balaclavas were all over the runway – like on Simone Rocha models, framed by pearls and jewels – and on the street style muses too. Eudon Choi showed off vintage inspired, brightly coloured, wide hairbands that only let fringes peek out. Nensi Dojaka’s models had their hair all gelled back, cropped or braided, letting their fresh faces and clothes be the stars.

But it is David Koma everyone is still talking about with his 90s zigzag hairbands. Another noughties fashion accessory might be making a comeback! And this one is actually rather practical.

It’s all about the eyes
While hair and foundation trends seemed to root for ‘less is more’, all attention has been given to the eyes. The main beauty tip coming out of London Fashion Week AW22 is that when Pat McGrath created that graphic eye for Julia Fox at Paris Fashion Week, a 2022 trend was born.

Mark Fast models sported an amplified smoky eye that seemed to take direct inspiration from McGrath’s current work. As did the models on Aadnevik’s runway. Some took a different approach to the bold eye, like Simone Rocha who continued her bedazzled theme with jewelled eyes rather than makeup. And Yuhan Wang, whose models wore long pastel-coloured eyelash extensions and minimal makeup.

All in all, the message of London Fashion Week AW22’s makeup artists is to spend less time on caking on foundation, creating contours or sweating under the curling iron. Your eyes are the only part we’re paying attention to in the coming months it seems! We suggest adding a little more height to your liquid liner, staying dark and maybe braving a little extra length on that flick.
