We often spend so much time on eyes and lips when prepping for a party that skin is overlooked. “Put the emphasis on making your skin look flawless,” says MAC’s Gordon Espinet, “and you need less foundation, less concealer, less powder.”
Prime time
Not matter how much of a rush you’re in, don’t forget to apply a make-up primer – one that reduces pores and fine lines, and makes skin super-smooth, keeping the foundation popped on top of it there for longer. Fact is, with technology today, this is a make-up essential not to be missed. The best ones under party lights are the gel creams, such as Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, R160; Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, R295, and YSL Top Secrets Flash Radiance Skincare Brush, R555.
Over the top?
“The base needs to be sheer so that skin peeks through the make-up,” says Olay’s Bruce Grayson. Try a foundation that makes skin look like suede, not powdered, and incorporates silicone, which primes imperfections. Choose from Clarins Instant Smooth Foundation, R335; Max Factor Second Skin Foundation, R170; or Bourjois Mineral Matte Mousse Foundation, R140, but only apply where you need to even out a little, not all over. Don’t expect foundation to cover spots, as it’ll cake the areas, and your make-up will look older. Dab concealer on blemishes, and keep skin looking fresh.
Quick complexion boost
Cleanse, then apply Dior Masque Magique Purifying Radiance Mask, R360, our new favourite that looks shiny for 10 minutes but, when rinsed off, leaves skin really smooth. Then a once-over with Sensai Silky Purifying Pore Clarifying Essence, R380, and I’m nearly ready.
