Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and one common obstacle that many individuals face is product buildup. Over time, styling products and oils cause a residue to accumulate on the scalp, leading to various issues such as dull hair, dandruff, and even hindered hair growth.

Experiment with these different techniques of removing product buildup from your scalp to find the one that works best for your hair type:
Clarifying shampoos
One of the most straightforward solutions is to invest in a good clarifying shampoo. These specialised shampoos are designed to deep-cleanse the scalp, removing accumulated product residue and impurities. It’s essential to use them sparingly, as they can be potent and may strip the hair of natural oils and leave your scalp dry if overused. Aim to incorporate a clarifying shampoo into your routine once a week or as needed.
Apple cider vinegar rinse
A natural remedy for product buildup is an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water and pour the mixture over your scalp after shampooing. Massage it into your scalp for a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly. ACV helps balance the pH of the scalp and dissolve product residue without harsh chemicals.
Baking soda scrub
Baking soda is known for its exfoliating properties and can be used to create a gentle scalp scrub. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with water to form a paste, and massage it into your scalp. Rinse thoroughly and follow up with a moisturising conditioner. However, use this method sparingly to avoid over-drying your hair and scalp.
Lemon juice treatment
Lemon juice contains citric acid, which can help break down product buildup and balance the scalp’s pH. Mix fresh lemon juice with water and apply it to your scalp. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Keep in mind that lemon juice may lighten your hair over time, so consider this factor if you have colour-treated hair.
Tea tree oil scalp massage
Tea tree oil has natural anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, making it an excellent choice for combating product buildup. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo or carrier oil (such as coconut or jojoba oil) and massage it into scalp, all to rest for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly. Be careful of using too much essential oil – it’s potent.
Dish washing liquid
An unconventional technique but oh so effective. This technique is only to be done once in a while and very minimal product should be used. Apply a small amount directly onto the scalp and rub vigorously to lift the product. Thereafter, wash your hair with your normal shampoo and conditioner.
