Grey hair has had its share in the spotlight since the turn of the decade. In 2018 especially, everyone rushed to capitalise on the trend, giving the beauty world its own run of 50 shades of grey. The best part? Age didn’t matter at all.
Now, it seems that silver styling has taken the baton from its darker shade, earmarking the hair trend to watch for 2022, and it’s all thanks to a fantasy world that’s had its chokehold on our own since we were introduced to the Targaryen family.
If you haven’t watched Game of Thrones, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that its prequel, House of the Dragon was recently released. However, whether you’re a die-hard GoT fan or are exhausted of hearing people tell you to watch it, the influence this show has on the most unsuspecting elements of our lives (like beauty) is inarguable, sneaking intricately into the world around us.
Game of Thrones world has influenced beauty and fashion before
But isn’t Game of Thrones about dragons and war and a lot of dying? Sure. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t had its influence on the fashion and beauty industry. Cast your mind back to some of the top fashion houses inspiration just a few years ago, where Grecian dresses suddenly popped up on the runways of Alexander McQueen and Valentino.
Renowned fashion search engine, Lyst attributed the looks to Game of Thrones, adding that these were some of the most-searched styles circa 2017, which preceded the final season in 2019.
So, why the silver-haired fox?
According to hair experts at Cloud Nine, since the release of House of the Dragon, the search interest for silver hair soared by 4000%.
The source? The premise of House of the Dragon takes us back in time in the GoT world, and casts our focus naturally on the family that shares the title – the silver-haired Targaryens. Seeing all those cool tones on screen is a sure way to spark an idea of changing up our looks a little, or for those who already have icy tones, reinforcing the idea that the looks are beautiful.
Silver and grey hair are definitely not the same, however, experts predict that both will be on the rise in 2022. ‘Oyster grey’ has already been dubbed one of the top colours to watch, as herringbone highlights continue to reign supreme.
Now if you already have grey or silver hair (naturally or from bleaching) you might be thinking that it isn’t as glamourous as TV shows make it look. Luckily, there are a few ways to enhance your hair that won’t require you to move into your hair salon. Here are some of our best tips.
If it braids you’re after, try the silver or grey ombre box braid style, a perfect way to add both colour and length to your hair. Silver looks are also stunning when it comes to curls, but remember that whether you’re naturally silver or decide to embark on the colour, oils are all-important to integrate into your hair care routine to combat dryness.
For those looking to dive into the look with bleaching (no matter your hair type unless you suffer from allergies to certain shampoos), your best friend is purple shampoo. Purple shampoo is the jewel of properties that brighten and enhance those cool tones you’ve paid a lot for and would like to last longer than a few weeks. Chat to your hairdresser to find out which is the best for your hair.
