What is dry skin and how is it caused?
Dry skin is an uncomfortable skin condition marked by scaling, itching, cracking and can lead to more severe skin conditions. Severe dry skin conditions include eczema and psoriasis.
Dry skin happens when our bodies are unable to produce the natural oils known as lipids that form a barrier called the hydro-lipid barrier system. There are also several external factors that contribute to dry skin including anything from dry weather, heat, harsh soaps and detergents to hot showers and air conditioning.
For people who have an impaired hydro-lipid barrier system, these external factors exacerbate the condition further. Apart from causing extreme discomfort, dry skin and chronic dry skin especially, can also have long lasting psychological effects should the problem persist.
What is an emollient and how does it help?
Emollients are medical moisturisers used to treat eczema. They are different from cosmetic moisturisers in that they should be unperfumed and do not have ‘anti-ageing’ additives.
Emollients have been used for over 5,000 years and they form an essential part of the therapy for all dry skin conditions, including atopic and contact eczema.
Emollients soothe and relieve the itch, forming an oily layer over the skin surface which traps water beneath it. The resulting restoration of the skin’s barrier function by emollients prevents the penetration of irritants, allergens and bacteria, thereby avoiding or reducing the development of eczema and infection.
Emollients are safe and effective – a good skin care routine using emollients can soothe, moisturise, and protect the skin, so helping to reduce the number of eczema areas.
SBR Lipocream is used to assist in treating dry skin by fortifying and repairing the skin’s barrier function by replacing two physiological skin lipids, free fatty acids and cholesterol.
It also allows a certain amount of water to pass through the skin thus maintaining the proper balance. This cream is ideal for chronic skin conditions such as eczema and should be applied three to four times daily.
