What is Slugging?
Slugging is the process of applying a layer of petroleum-based product, like Vaseline, to the skin. This is done as the last step to your skincare routine in the evenings. It’s more than just covering yourself in Vaseline and calling it a night, though. Skin experts like dermatologist Dr Vanita Rattan have confirmed that slugging is a fantastic way to lock in the moisture of your skin, keeping it supple and hydrated.

Why would you slug overnight?
Transepidermal Water Loss is a process that happens to us every day and night. At night though, we tend to lose the most moisture in our skin and this can result in waking up with tight, dry or even flaky skin.
This is where slugging comes in. Petroleum based products are made up of molecules that are too big for the skin to absorb. The product instead forms a shiny, slimy protective sealant layer outside of the skin that locks moisture in.
Make the most of it
Even though we’ve seen our fair share of beauty vloggers apply a full layer of Vaseline to their faces, it’s really not necessary. A far more effective way of slugging that will save you a rand, is to only apply to dry areas that need moisture. You don’t want to be flooding your skin with oily products if you already have oily or combination skin. Only apply where needed!
While petroleum does help seal in the moisture, it doesn’t moisturize your skin. To get the best results in slugging, it’s important to use a good moisturizer on dry areas, like under the eyes or on the lips, before applying your slug layer.
It’s also important to know that using skincare containing active ingredients underneath your slugging layer will enhance the effect of those ingredients. While this could mean your skin would be getting the max benefits possible from these products, it could also cause skin irritation. Breathability is important, especially when using strong active ingredients. We wouldn’t risk it.
Don’t slug over acne areas! This locks in bacteria and oil which can trigger breakouts.

Is it worth it?
Absolutely! Slugging is a great way to make sure your skin stays hydrated. Dry skin can invite a host of other skin concerns, so keeping it supple and retaining a healthy amount of moisture in your skin can only do you good.
