In the current era of sustainability, living green is the way to go. Finding good alternatives to practices and products that are harmful to the Earth has become a top priority. Many of us know the harmful effects that some of our choice beauty products cause, but how can we do better?
It doesn’t mean giving up your entire beauty routine. It comes down to nurturing a mindful connection with your actions and how they affect the world around you. The key to making sustainable choices is understanding why your choices matter and yes, they really do!
To help put things into perspective, Earthsap shares five simple, informative tips on starting your all-green beauty routine, with advice on how we can swap out and switch up from the harmful products that are negatively contributing to the planet:
Change the way you shop
Buy ethically, buy locally and choose products which use fewer toxic chemicals, or which are 100% earth-friendly. Opt for earth-friendly face and body washes, shampoo and conditioner, roll ons, toothpastes, toners, moisturisers and the like, and don’t be fooled by labels! Make sure both the packaging and its contents are eco-friendly.
Recycle Reckoning
There’s no point switching to a more sustainable beauty regime if you’re not recycling the packaging your products come in. Get a recycle bin for your bathroom or dressing counter and keep up the green work. Where it’s possible, eliminate single use items like face wipes and cotton pads, use a hot cloth cleanse to remove your makeup instead.
Waste Not, Want Not
Make sure you’re making the most of your product before purchasing a new batch. Most beauty packaging is designed and sealed to keep the air out, which may make getting the last drop out a little tricky. That’s why it’s useful to keep a sturdy pair of scissors or pliers at-hand to open up the packaging and really get the last drop.
Ditch the silicone
Silicone is everywhere, in hair conditioners, body lotions and face creams. It doesn’t break down or decompose, and may even be a hormone disrupter. It may promise smooth, slidable texture and a glossy sheen that fills pores and fine lines, but it’s literally liquid plastic, similar to the kind you use to seal gaps in your shower stall. It creates congestion and causes a moisture barrier on your skin and hair. Consider using an organic product can deliver the same effect without the damage!
