We all know that finding a good hairdresser is a rare and wondrous thing. To find someone who “gets” what you want in a hairstyle without the need for too much panic or instruction is close to a miracle. We know of one woman who travelled two hours to a neighbouring city after her hairdresser had moved, just because “no one else could do her hair like Suzanna did”.
If you’re still looking for the ONE, not the romantic one, but the hairstyling ONE; here are five tips to help you meet the love of your locks.
1 Phone a friend
Ask friends or colleagues who have hairstyles you admire to refer you to their salons. Asking for salon-advice will get you into the right place and in front of the right stylist for you.
2 Know yourself, sister!
Hair salons are a lot like the Avengers movies – each stylist has a unique super-power. Some work better with curls, some better with colour. It all depends on what you want and need. The better you know what your hair challenges are, the better you can select and brief your stylist on what needs to be done. And if you don’t know, it’s time to familiarise yourself with the lingo. Knowing your layers from your blunts can mean the difference between a happy face or a good cry in the car if you aren’t careful.
3 Use social media and do your homework
Use the power of the interweb to get an idea of the type of reviews and feedback the salon receives. Most salons also have an Instagram page where you can check out the types of styles of which they’re most proud. If you see something you don’t like, you can just avoid them and move onto the next candidate.
4 Book a blow-out
Blow-outs are like Tinder coffee dates: low commitment events with a planned exit strategy. So, much like going on a date, we recommend test-driving your new hairdresser by getting a blow wave. This will give you a sense of their personality, skills and level of care before committing to a full colour and a cut.
5 Do they do toes as well?
If you’re a mani-pedi gal, or need the odd bit of threading, look for a salon that offers complementary (and complimentary!) beauty services such as nail painting or hair-removal. That way you consolidate your beauty regime into a single visit that saves you time and effort.
Choosing a hairdresser will be easy when you know exactly what you want out of one. Perhaps you’re looking for one who has the perfect treatment for dry hair or use haircare treatment products you are comfortable with. With these tips, you’re bound to make the right choice!
