Here’s everything you need to know about the latest trend in beauty – the lash lift – from our beauty editor Martinique Stevens.
Are these make-up mistakes making you look older?
Whether your lashes are straight and droopy, or short and curly, we all (myself included) want our lashes to look long, full and thick.
When doing our makeup, we all know just how important that final touch of applying mascara to our lashes is. Adding length and as well as a dark tint to the eyelashes really helps to pull any look together.
But sometimes you’re just plain out of time. Whether it be that morning rush to work, or that after-hours event you’ve got to get to, sometimes applying mascara and having to curl your lashes before can be an absolute pain…
This is where lash lifting comes in.
How does a lash lift work?
Unlike eyelash perming, a beauty treatment that gives lashes that curly, ‘dolly-look’, lash lifting aims at enhancing one’s own lashes by lifting them from the root and giving them more length, which really helps to open up the eyes and always makes you look bright-eyed and alert.
The process aims to put a kink in the base of the lashes to make them more upturned, and, instead of using a traditional perming rod, makes use of silicone pads placed under the lashes.

So how will a lash lift make my lashes look longer?
The perming solution essentially helps in creating an optical illusion- lashes that are curled upward look longer than those that are pointing straight forward or down.
What’s great about lash lifting is that it provides an alternative to eyelash extensions for those with straight lashes as well as those with lashes that appear very short due to their curl pattern.
The perming solution works to do the opposite on these short and curly lash types as it does on straight lashes. Instead of setting them in a curl pattern, it lengthens them out, making this a must try-treatment for all!
How long does a lash lift take?
Lash lifting sessions usually take between 45 and 60 mins to complete and the best part is that you can continue to use your favourite mascara 24 hours after the treatment, just make sure it’s not waterproof!
How much will an eyelash lift cost?
Expect to pay anywhere from R400 to R600 for your lash lift, depending on whether you choose to go with a tinting option as well or not.
