BookTok is always rife with incredible book recommendations. Unfortunately, though, we seldom see our very own talented authors make those recommendation lists. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of our top 5 books written by South Africans.
1. Love at First Flight by Jo Watson
Love at First Flight is a sweet and fun little contemporary romance that follows flight controller Pipa and pilot Andrew Boyce-Jones. It includes a fake dating plot, a wedding, a dreaded 10-year school reunion and witty charming humour.
2. The Tannie Maria Mystery books by Sally Andrew
Murder mysteries, good food, and South African anecdotes make the perfect recipe for a murder mystery series. These books follow Tannie Maria, a recipe writer turned true crime fighter, as she solves mysteries. With an average of 4/5 stars on Goodreads, you can bet that these funny and charming books are well worth adding to your TBR.
3. Red Ink by Angela Makholwa
If you’ve seen spotted Red Ink on Showmax, you’ve probably been drawn in by the intense premise of the show. But did you know it’s based on a best-selling novel by Angela Makholwa? It follows Lucy Khambule, a journalist turned publicist, who gets an unexpected call from The Butcher – a convicted serial killer. This thriller has several twists and turns and is as gruesome as you want it to be.
4. The Thing with Zola, by Zibu Sithole
I don’t know about you, but cosy beach reads are always a win, and The Thing with Zola by Zibu Sithole is the perfect addition to your next beachy vacay. Join Zola as she figures out how to readjust to South African life after 10 years in Europe. As with most 29-year-olds, she doesn’t really know what life has in store for her, especially as she tries to navigate family politics, a spicy office romance, and feeling lost.
