Synopsis
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now, Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big it could destroy everything. They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth. But a storm is coming…and not everyone can survive its wrath.
My review
Epic Adventure in Onyx Storm
Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros is nothing short of an epic adventure that left me utterly captivated from start to finish. After a heart-pounding first book and a thrilling sequel, this one takes the story to new heights, immersing us in a complex world of political intrigue, personal growth, and intense battles wrapped up in high fantasy goodness. If you thought you knew what to expect, think again—Yarros has created something remarkable.
A quest for political intrigue and personal growth
The story picks up where its predecessor left off, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Violet Sorrengail, now fully embracing her leadership role, must navigate a dangerous journey to secure allies in a world where enemies lie in wait both outside and within her ranks. It’s a quest that tests her intellect, strength, and willpower and a thrilling ride to witness.
One of the things I loved most about this book is the world-building. While Fourth Wing was full of excitement, Onyx Storm dives even deeper into the intricacies of the world, unveiling rich cultures, intriguing political dynamics, and multiple layers of foreshadowing. The quests Violet embarks on bring us to new lands, each one distinct and well-fleshed out. Deverelli, in particular, was a standout, and I can’t wait to see where Violet’s journey takes her next.
Character development at its finest
The character development in this book is extraordinary. Violet’s growth is monumental as she steps into her power and leadership role with conviction. She is fierce, intelligent, and unapologetically herself, and her journey from uncertainty to confidence is inspiring. Xaden, too, is as captivating as ever. His struggles with his second signet and the impending threat of the venin make for a compelling arc, and his complex relationship with Violet continues to evolve in real and emotionally satisfying ways.
The secondary characters also shine in this instalment. I absolutely adored the new perspectives from Rhiannon, Imogen, and even Ridoc. Rhi’s leadership abilities were a highlight for me, and Ridoc’s witty banter and protective nature perfectly balanced the plot’s intensity. I was especially moved by Sawyer’s development and his personal battles, and I found myself more attached to these characters than I anticipated.
The romance
The romance between Violet and Xaden is, as always, swoon-worthy, but the maturity of their relationship in Onyx Storm stands out. Gone are the moments of pure physical attraction from earlier books, and in their place is a deep, trusting bond. The way Xaden serves Violet above everything else shows the depth of their connection. There are frustrations, of course—this is a high-stakes fantasy, after all—but their chemistry remains palpable, and I couldn’t get enough of their dynamic.
A heart-stopping ending
Yarros’s writing is exceptional, with every chapter packing an emotional punch. The plot is filled with twists and turns, and just when you think you have it figured out, she throws in another surprise that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The ending is phenomenal, leaving plenty to anticipate and ponder in the next books.
Anticipating the future
While some might argue that Violet’s second signet is underwhelming, I’m confident it will play a significant role in future instalments. The entire series carefully sets the stage for even more intense, heart-stopping moments.
My final thoughts
Onyx Storm is an absolute triumph. It’s a gripping, fast-paced, and emotionally charged high fantasy novel that solidifies Rebecca Yarros as a master storyteller. I couldn’t put it down, and I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or a newcomer, this book is an unmissable journey into a world that will haunt your thoughts long after you’ve turned the final page. Five stars, without a doubt.
