In a world where comfort has become of the utmost importance, it is no wonder that bouclé sofas have made a comeback. Th cozy bouclé fabric has been the textile of choice for mid-century modern furniture and the famous staple of couture house Chanel. It’s trending return though has seen the rise of cloud-like sofas set among the creamy interiors of the most stylish contemporary homes.
The history of bouclé sofas
Back in the late 1940s renowned architect and designer Eero Saarinen debuted his Womb Chair, made for Florence Knoll who wanted a chair that she could ‘really curl up in’. The fabric was what Architectural Digest have explained as ‘a nubby textile made from a yarn of, fittingly, curled fibres’. This was of course, bouclé fabric. It is this design that has inspired the bouclé sofas and furniture we see trending today.

Bouclé is traditionally made with wool though cotton, linen and even silk have been used to achieve its texture. Though bouclé’s series of looped fibres create a rugged look, the fabric is soft to touch and cozy to curl-up on. Just as Florence Knoll had originally requested.
The modern bouclé sofas
Today’s iteration of bouclé is most often seen in easy neutral shades of white – like ivory, pearl and cream – covering alluring curved sofas. While the muted tones are very modern minimalist, the shapes are evocative of the Saarinen original, but also the Djinn chair from 2001: A Space Odyssey. These rounded bouclé sofas give off a sense of calm and coziness – reminiscent of cloud-like forms – that is easy on the eye. This gentle architecture is accentuated further by the fleecy texture of their trendy upholstery.
