Local multi-creative and mom, Yasmin Furmie, hasn’t always had a career in style. In fact, before developing her first Sisi collection, she worked as a social worker. Now, Yasmin inspires hundreds of women across South Africa with her bold, unique style. Yasmin says that style has always played an integral role in her life, it was just a matter of making her career in fashion happen.
Let’s learn a little more about the 59-year-old local style icon.
In her interview with Between 10 and 5, Yasmin says:
“My philosophy when it comes to clothes is simple. Do what makes you happy. Tell the stories that are your unique experiences. Take risks. Don’t settle for the safe path. Break the mould and most of all don’t apologise for who you are. Clothes should be fun and induce endless joy when worn.”

In another interview with Pap Culture, Yasmin says the most frequent comment she gets is “you look good for your age” and she despises it. She goes on to explain:
“You wouldn’t tell a younger person, ‘you look good for being so young,’ so why should you tell an older person that? Just tell me I look good.”
Talking to Wanted, Furmie shares her views on femininity:
“People may look at me and think that I’m not feminine in the traditional sense of the word, that I don’t perform the sort of stereotypical role of femininity — being demure, having long hair, almost being invisible — especially at my age. I’m outspoken, I’m loud, I’m in your face, I take up space, and perhaps those are not the sort of things that people think of in terms of a very feminine woman.”
