If you’ve been anywhere around BookTok, you’ve probably heard about Sarah J Maas and A Court of Thorns and Roses or ACOTAR. If you’re wondering whether it’s worth all the hype it gets, the short answer is YES.
Not only does our author pull you in within the first few words of the page, but Maas’s world-building also is nothing short of magnificent. Her stories in general manage to pull you in and keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the entire ride, and ACOTAR is no different.
We meet Feyre, our human protagonist, while she’s out hunting and quickly learn that, despite being the youngest, has kept her destitute family alive for several years. After unknowingly killing a Fae, she is whisked away to the magical faerie land of Prythian by another, thanks to an age-old treaty. Enter our love interest Tamlin – who turns out to be hiding a lot more than just his masked face.
Feyre, who’s still a little naïve, but far from a damsel in distress, holds her own in this world, managing to befriend all those she meets. Including the feisty Alis and our beloved Lucien.
In true Sarah J Maas fashion though, all is not as it seems. Which our quick-witted heroin quickly discovers. Thanks to her writing style, Maas manages to weave in her foreshadowing in such a way that you might not pick up on things until it’s too late – letting you feel and think what Feyre is throughout her story.
The beginning of the novel is a tad slow, but the action picks up later on, with the introduction of sadistic, evil new characters. This helps propel Feyre’s character arc and the love story that goes along with it.
But, perhaps the best thing is the slight cliffhanger at the end of this book, which leaves you questioning what were Rhysand’s motives.
If you want to get into fantasy, then I wholeheartedly suggest diving into A Court of Thorns and Roses. It will help reignite your love for reading – if only to get the answers to all your questions. And lucky for you, Maas does answer them… eventually.
Should you read this book? Yes. Is it worth the hype? Also yes. We can never get enough of Sarah J Maas and her worlds.
