All aboard the conspiracy train, next stop: the rumour mill. Is singer Sam Smith really just Adele dressed in drag? When the 30-year-old singer appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show recently, Sam was asked about the craziest rumour he’s ever heard about himself, to which he promptly responded “everyone seems to think that I’m Adele…”
Ever since his appearance on Drew’s show, fans and listeners have been shaken by shared similarities between the stars.
In his interview with Barrymore, Sam says:
“Everyone seems to think that I’m Adele, in drag, ’cause we’ve never been seen in the same room together.”
At a glance, the comparison isn’t that obvious, but at a closer listen, you’ll have to admit, it is quite odd. Possibly the craziest part about the rumour which has flooded the internet, is that both singers sound so similar too! Sped up, Sam sounds like Adele, and sped down, Adele sounds like Sam. What’s going on here? The internet investigates:

Sam continues:
“And if you slow down her voice, it sounds maybe a bit like mine. So people think we’re the same person and I’m just in drag right now.”
Perhaps the two stars do sound very similar, but we don’t see the physical resemblance…although, Adele is only four years older than Sam is, which does lump them in the same age group.

The rumour isn’t new, though. Fans have been comparing the likes of the two for years before Sam ever owned up to the rumour on Drew’s show.

Despite the striking similarities in their singing voices, Sam and Adele have notably different talking voices, and it becomes obvious that they come from separate areas in the UK. Perhaps they aren’t the same person, but the world demands a collaboration to prove it.
It must be quite flattering to be compared to the one and only Adele, but Sam confirmed that he certainly is not her dressed in drag.
“What a fabulous compliment, but I am not Adele.”
So, until we see Sam and Adele performing together (can you imagine!?) we’ll keep the rumour going.
