“Easy on me” singer and icon Adele recently opened up about her health, revealing a condition that she’s bee suffering with for over half her life.
During her performance at The Colosseum on New Year’s Eve 2022 she was forced to share her Sciatica diagnosis with fans because she was struggling with the condition on stage.
She was unable to move as freely as she wanted to. According to Cosmopolitan, Adele told the audience: “I have to waddle these days as I have really bad Sciatica,” while launching merchandise t-shirts into the crowd.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a nerve condition rooted from the sciatic nerve. This is the largest nerve in the body that originates in the lower back and travels down through the hips, buttocks, and both legs. The condition often occurs when the never is compressed. In Adele’s case, it was a herniated disc, an injury that Adele previously chronicled in 2021.
Mayo Clinic classifies symptoms to include pain, numbness or weakness in the affected regions or you may experience a tingling sensation, like pins and needles. Symptoms are worse when moving, sneezing or coughing.
This is not the first time Adele has spoken about her condition. In November 2021 she explained in an interview with The Face that she was 15 years old when her first injury occurred. As a result of this injury and others, she’s experienced pain for most of her life. She explained, “I slipped my first disc when I was 15 from sneezing. I was in bed and I sneezed and my fifth one flew out. In January, I slipped my sixth one, my L6. And then when I had a C‑section, my core was useless.”
She continued, “I’ve been in pain with my back for, like, half of my life, really. It flares up, normally due to stress or from a stupid bit of posture. But, when I got my tummy strong, down at the bottom, which I never had before, my back don’t play up as much. It means I can do more, I can run around with my kid a little bit more.”
Adele added, “I like feeling strong, I really do. I love it. I was lifting weights this morning, and I’ve gone up from what I was doing a couple of weeks ago. When I feel that I have the weight of the world – of my world at least – on my shoulders, I can handle it a bit more because I’ve gone up 10 pounds with my weight. It really was just a metaphor for surviving.”
