Ever ordered something off a menu without checking the price first? Let Anele Mdoda’s cautionary tale of spending R20 000 at a nightclub for a bottle of tequila be the warning you heed.
Picture this. You’re ‘rolling up to the club’. It’s the 29th December, at 2 AM. You reckon it’s time to celebrate – it’s December, you’re in the spirit, so why not?
You ask the waitress at the nightclub to run a separate bill for you, and you dive into ordering two bottles of bubbly, and a bottle of tequila for a kick – your closest friends are with you, the nightclub is pumping (smoke machines and all) and you’re ready for a buzz.
The waitress goes on to ask you which bottle of tequila you would like. They make a suggestion. A bottle of “1942”. You, now in ‘party’ mode, agree. A bottle of whatever will do. Just bring me tequila…
“Not problems, just solutions” says Mdoda herself.
Now it’s 4:32 AM. You’ve had the best night out in Cape Town – the first night of your December holidays. DJ Zinhle was there, celebrating her birthday and Nadia Nakia performed. The smoke machine is still going strong.
Finally, you ask for the bill and when it comes to greet you, you have the fright of your life.
“R20 000”.
You sober up rather quickly after that, as it starts to sink in that you’ve just danced the night away with a bottle of R16 000 Don Julio 1942.
This is what happened to Anele, who says that her holiday nearly ended before it even started, all thanks to Don Julio.
In her comedic retelling of the cautionary tale on 94.7, Anele went on to explain that when she ordered her bottle of tequila, she was expecting a smaller bottle – a Don Julio Reposado or Blanco perhaps, but not the tall bottle of 1942.
Mdoda then went on to argue that her waitress should have told her how much the bottle had cost, later adding that she did not tip the waitress – 1, because she failed to inform Anele of the price and 2. because she just blew her holiday budget on a single bottle of tequila.
“I was so angry guys. I sobered up same time”
The lesson of this cautionary tale? Never order without looking at the menu first.
