Barbie “snubbed” at Oscars, which has sparked controversy online. All despite the critically acclaimed film bagging 8 nominations this year.
The Academy finally released the nominations for the 96th Oscar Academy Awards for last year’s films. The highest-grossing film last year, Barbie, was nominated for 8 awards this year. However, the lead actress, Margot Robbie, and director, Greta Gerwig, were seemingly passed over in their respective categories, sparking controversy online.
Since the release of the Oscar nominations, fans of the movie have been quite vocal about the lead actress and director being passed over in the Best Actress and Best Director. Several fans have cried out against this snub, seemingly stating that the Oscars have “proved the point of the movie.”
Threads, X (formally Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok have been abuzz with fans sharing their dissatisfaction with this outcome – especially where Ken is concerned. Ryan Gosling (Ken) was nominated in the Best Actor category – which has seemingly been the root cause of the controversy.
Many have alluded to the Oscars and the Academy ignoring the message of the movie.
@regansrecs Replying to @Regan Pence let’s talk about the Barbie snubs. 🥲 Greta, you’ll always be Best Director in my heart. #oscars2024 #barbiemovie #oscarsnub #gretagerwig #greenscreen
Really upset about #Barbie being snubbed, especially in the Best Director category.
The movie is absolutely brilliant, and Greta Gerwig is a genius.#Oscars #Oscars2024

As wonderful as America Ferrera is in Barbie, her now iconic monologue being recognized but not Margot Robbie’s subtle mannerism of experiencing what it is to be human is baffling. She IS the movie. #Oscars fumbled it real bad here. pic.twitter.com/SwNNzkX3ep

But fans weren’t the only ones to express their disappointment. Ryan Gosling (who played Ken) shared his disappointment in a statement as well.
He said: “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie… To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
His full statement reads:
“I am extremely honoured to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honoured and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.
But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film.
No recognition would be possible for anyone in the film without their talent, grit and genius.
To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.
Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.
Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”
– Ryan Gosling, “Barbie”
America Ferrera also shared her disappointment with the “snubs” stating that “Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made history and raised the bar with Barbie.”
Despite all the controversy, Barbie was nominated for 8 categories this year, including Best Picture. Additionally, Gerwig and the film have walked away with several awards so far this awards season.
