Since her debut in 1959, Barbie has inspired children worldwide to pursue their dreams and explore endless possibilities. This new Diwali doll furthers that mission by honouring the rich cultural heritage of Diwali, one of India’s most cherished celebrations, and marks a meaningful step toward greater representation in South Africa.
“This Diwali, we’re thrilled to spotlight the beauty of diversity with the launch of this doll in South Africa,” says Terusha Naidoo, Mattel South Africa’s marketing manager. “The Barbie Diwali doll not only embodies India’s vibrant cultural heritage but also celebrates the approximately 1.5 million people of Indian descent in South Africa who have woven their heritage into the rich tapestry of our country since the mid-1800s.”
The launch event took place in Pretoria, where Modern Tailors Ambassador, a contemporary Indian eatery, provided the perfect setting for a true Diwali experience. The venue allowed guests to immerse themselves in the holiday’s rich traditions, offering a heartfelt acknowledgement of shared heritage and the doll’s cultural significance.
For Kirya Gangiah, the release of this Diwali Barbie is deeply personal.
“Diwali holds a special place in the lives of families across South Africa, and with this launch, Barbie is giving the Indian community—and my community—a chance to feel represented and celebrated…Barbie has always inspired kids to believe in limitless possibilities, and this Diwali doll validates the older generation’s experiences and gives the younger generation a proud sense of identity in our multicultural society.”
This partnership with Anita Dongre also brings a stunning representation of Indian fashion. The Barbie Diwali Doll is dressed in Dongre’s Moonlight Bloom ensemble, which features a vibrant lehenga skirt, floral Koti vest, and choli top adorned with intricate patterns of dahlias, jasmine, and lotus—symbols of beauty and strength. Golden bangles and shimmering earrings complete the look, capturing the radiant glow of Diwali lights.
“As we celebrate Diwali, Barbie and I encourage fans worldwide to embrace the beauty and heritage of Indian fashion and culture,” says Dongre. “This partnership feels like a perfect alignment—my brand focuses on empowerment, and Barbie symbolizes the limitless potential for girls everywhere.”
The Barbie Diwali Anita Dongre doll is now available at select retailers for R1 169.99, offering a meaningful tribute to South Africa’s multicultural spirit this Diwali season.
