Bobi’s death was announced by a veterinarian Dr Karen Becker, who had worked with Bobi before. As quoted in a report from the BBC, Dr Becker wrote:
“Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough, for those who loved him.”
Bobi was first recognised as the world’s oldest living dog and oldest dog ever in February earlier this year.
He spent his life with the Costa family in a Portuguese village called Conqueiros, near Portugal’s west coast.
He was born as one of three purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo pups, in an outbuilding. His life started when he escaped being put down after his owners decided they did not have the means to care for puppies.
However, Leonel Costa and his brothers saved Bobi from that fate and kept his presence a secret until he became a cherished member of the family.
Bobi’s owner Leonel said that Bobi lived a trouble-free life, experiencing only one hospital scare in 2018, and difficulty walking with worsening eyesight months leading up to his passing.
According to Leonel, the key to his Bobi’s longevity lay in the peaceful environment they live in, in the small village of Conqueiros.
Bobi went out with a bang. Earlier this year in May, after he had been dubbed the world’s oldest dog by Guinness World Records, he celebrated his 31st birthday with over 100 guests (including a performing dance troupe) at his traditional Portuguese birthday bash.
Bobi, in his lifetime, has gained international fame with people from all corners of the globe visiting Conqueiros to meet him.
Guinness World Records has not yet named Bobi’s successor to the title of world’s oldest living dog.
