National Women’s Day is upon us. On Friday, 9 August, South Africa will be celebrating the amazing social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women from all walks of life. And with the occasion falling on a public holiday, there’s no reason not to celebrate too! We’ve rounded up five easy ways to spend Women’s Day without breaking the bank.
A mini feat
In the spirit of Women’s Day, why not celebrate the amazing athletic achievements of women across the globe by ticking off a mini-feat of your own? Activities like a morning hike up Lion’s Head or cycling through Huddle Park are both great ways to get your day started on a productive note and feel good about your achievement.

Girls’ night in
The obvious option is to stay home, but why not mix things up with a girls’ night in? Grab a bottle of wine, girlfriends in tow, and enjoy a night of shameless chick-flick viewing! With streaming services like Netflix and Showmax, you’ll be spoilt for choice – you’ll find everything from classics like The Notebook, to absorbing thrillers like the latest season of Big Little Lies, featuring our favourite all-star female cast, definitely worth a binge night.
Pack a picnic basket
A picnic is a simple, affordable way of getting your girlfriends together. Spend the day in a scenic park or on the beach, soaking up the winter sun with your favourite people. A basket full of snacks and board games can go a long way. Take a look at Jamie Oliver’s tips for a fabulous picnic:

Declutter…
Look. Not all of us love cleaning and organising, but there are plenty of us who actually do. Especially if it’s a Kondo-inspired clean up, where getting rid of all the junk you don’t need anymore can actually help you feel lighter, and more in-control of your life. Not up for doing it alone? Make a day of it with the girls. And why not? It’s right in time for spring!
You can find Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix – another binge-worthy series we love.

Give back and feel great
Consider a selfless act this Women’s Day. The options of giving back are endless. Volunteer for a beach clean-up in the morning, help out at an animal shelter (what’s better than playing with puppies?), or donate a box of old clothes to someone who may need them more. There are so many great ways to check off a deed and feel good about it after.
