Superstar singer, rapper and classically trained flutist, Lizzo, made history during a concert in Washington DC earlier this week, when she paused her live performance to play on a 1800s crystal flute once owned by the 4th President of the United States, James Madison.
Die-hard Lizzo fans already know about her aptitude for the ethereal wind instrument, but casual listeners may not be aware that the singer/songwriter has a versed history in playing the flute:
Before her performance on Tuesday earlier this week, Lizzo charmed the crowd at The Library of Congress’s Great Hall as she played on various collectible flutes in the Great Hall’s Reading Room and flute vault:
The following day, during her live show in Washington DC, Lizzo was presented with a 200-year-old crystal flute that once belonged to the fourth US president, James Madison. The superstar later took to her socials:
“Yeah I’m double posting but I’m the first and only person to play this presidential crystal flute its literally an heirloom— like…as a flute player this is iconic and I will never be over it.”

After her few moments of history made, in true Lizzo fashion, she followed up exclaiming:
“I just twerked and played James Madison’s flute from the 1800s!”
